Enhancing Multimodal Interaction and Communicative Competence through Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in Synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication (SCMC)

The number of publications on live online teaching and distance learning has significantly increased over the past two years since outbreak worldwide spread COVID-19 pandemic, but more research is needed effective methodologies their impact process. This aimed to analyze student interaction multimodal communication through Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in a Synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication (SCMC) environment. For this purpose, 90 teacher candidates enrolled subject Applied Linguistics at university were randomly assigned different teams create collaboratively digital infographics based language methods. Then, all explained projects classmates completed multimedia activities each method. Finally, participants discussed self-perceived benefits (relevance, enjoyment, interest) limitations (connectivity, distraction) SCMC learning. Quantitative qualitative data gathered pre- post-tests, class observation discussion. statistical findings revealed positive attitude towards integration TBLT an environment high level satisfaction with (written, verbal, visual) interaction. However, complained about low quality materials, use technology just for substitution, lack peer-to-peer classes during pandemic.
